Drawer count, equipped vs empty, load capacity and layout: everything to consider before buying a tool trolley for your garage or professional workshop.
Why the trolley is the heart of the workshop
A good tool trolley saves you minutes on every job: the right socket is always in the same drawer, the torque wrench is at hand and nothing gets lost under a bench. Choosing the wrong one means cramped drawers, tools that rattle around and a top that bends the first time you rest a gearbox on it.
Equipped or empty?
The first decision is whether to buy the trolley already equipped with tools or empty.
- Equipped trolleys arrive with sockets, combination wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and ratchets already organized in foam or plastic modules. A 172 to 480 piece assortment covers most mechanical work out of the box, and per-piece cost is far below buying tools separately.
- Empty trolleys make sense when you already own quality tools and only need storage that rolls.
For a first professional setup, an equipped workshop trolley is almost always the better value.
How many drawers do you really need?
Six to eight drawers is the sweet spot for a general mechanical workshop. Count one drawer each for sockets and ratchets, wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers, power tool accessories, and consumables. Models with full-width drawers swallow long items like pry bars and breaker bars; trolleys with side storage add space for spray cans and bulky power tools without eating drawer space.
Check these four specs before you buy
- Total load capacity: a serious trolley carries 300 kg or more distributed across the drawers.
- Drawer slides: ball-bearing slides stay smooth under load; friction rails wear out fast.
- Wheels: at least two lockable castors, and larger diameters roll better over floor joints and hoses.
- Lock: a central lock protects the whole cabinet, essential in shared workshops.
Trolley or fixed cabinet?
If your work happens around the vehicle, the trolley wins. If tools stay at the bench, a larger fixed workshop cabinet offers more volume per euro. Many workshops combine both: a big cabinet as the master store and a trolley loaded for the current job.
